vintage pen overview summary

Up here is a vintage Conway Stewart 74 fountain pen, which was manufactured in England circa 1957-63. The pen is in excellent condition, very glossy and minty body, without any damage. This Conway Stewart was manufactured in stunning BLUE HERRINGBONE celluloid material. The single GRECIAN gold cap band even makes the pen more attractive. The gold pocket clip, side lever and the trim are in preistine condition. It bears a correct large 14ct Conway Stewart #5 gold nib, slightly bent at tip but still working. The most special point of this pen is the filler system. This pen was called SPEEDY-PHIL because of its very unusual filling mechanism. Actually this trade mark can be seen on early boxes of the 'International pen', and is represented by a young boy in red sitting on a 'flying' lever pen with the inscription 'I'm Speedy Phil'. I am not sure if the filler of this pen is in working condition. Nevertheless, this is a very rare model among CS series. The pen has been polished and cleaned. The pen comes with a CS paper box. This Conway Stewart is a classic elegance and has been produced to the highest standards of carftsmanship. The special filling system even makes it extremely attractive, rare and highly sought after by collectors all over the world. This would make an excellent gift to treat yourself or for someone special.

fountain pen history

In 1905, Mr Jarvis and Mr Gardner formed Conway Stewart at 13 Paternoster Row, London. Their objective was to produce elegant, timelessly beautiful, yet functional writing instrument.

In the 1920s the name of 'Conway Stewart' was trademarked. The list of filling mechanisms available expanded to eyedroppers, lever fillers, pump fillers and safeties. During the depression years, the company managed to survive by continuing to offer good reliable pens at reasonable prices. In the 1950s, with the creative use of colored plastic Conway Stewart reached its peak.

Conway Stewart pens have always been the preferred choice of the most discerning and famous people from around the world. People such as Winston Churchill, who used a Conway Stewart pen throughout the war years, up to the present time, whereby Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was presented with two gold pens to Commemorate The Queens Golden Jubilee.

Conway Stewart was the official pen chosen by the British Government for the G8 Summit at which Tony Blair, the prior British Prime Minister, presented a Conway Stewart No.58 set to each of the world leaders.
