vintage pen overview summary

Up here is a vintage Parker "51" Mark I series fountain pen and pencil set, which was manufactured in USA circa 1950s. The size of this Parker 51 is large, with overall length near 5-1/2 inches. The Parker "51" went into production in 1941, and remained a best-seller for decades thereafter. Perhaps no other fountain pen has been so unanimously acclaimed as a classic. Nor is it merely a triumph of styling - though it has a place in the Museum of Modern Art's design collection, and Lazlo Moholy-Nagy found it worthy of praise - for it is also one of the most robust and practical wirting instruments ever made. This stylish Parker "51" Mark I series has been manufactured in stunning royal black color celluloid material. The cap is in STERLING SILVER, in excellent MINTY condition, without any ding dent damage, which is pretty rare among the model (most Sterling cap bears major dings). On the top of pocket clip is a blue diamond, representing Parker's lifetime warranty. The vacumatic filling system is in working order; and the pencil is also in working condition. This Parker "51" has a classic elegance and has been produced to the highest standards of craftsmanship, technology and aesthetics. This is rare and very much sought after, of such a collectible and vintage pen in nice condition.

fountain pen history

The Parker Pen Company was founded in 1888 by George S. Parker, whose mission was to manufacture a better pen. The Parker Pen Company's tradition epitomizes the highest standards of craftsmanship, technology, and aesthetics.

The Parker 51 was named because research and development was completed in Parker's 51st year (1888-1939). Introduced in the US market in 1941, it soon became widely imitated by most pen manufacturers. None were successful to any significant degree in competing against the famed Parker 51. It was a revolutionary design when it debuted, advertised as 'Ten Years Ahead' of its time.

"Like a pen from another planet"....."So unique and so beautiful there is nothing to compare to it--so good it cannot be improved by any known method!"

The Parker 51 remained popular and can still claim the highest sales volume of any fountain pen. It is considered by most collectors to be the best pen ever made, and is truly recognizable throughout the world. In a poll by the Illinois Institute of Technology, it was voted the fourth best industrial design of the 20th century.
